"Their pictures on our backs - Their names in our hearts”
A recent report released by the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) states that every day approximately 20 current and former military service members take their own lives (a report in 2013 stated 22, 2016 stated approximately 20, while other reports suggest suicides among active duty military are rising - it is always 'too many.' )
There are a number of reasons for this startling statistic, among them: post-traumatic stress (PTS), the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI), challenges of adjustment after returning home from a deployment, the often difficult transition from military to civilian life, and the negative stigma in the military community around seeking help for issues related to mental health.
The military service members are not the only ones suffering.
The families and close friends are overwhelmed from complicated grief long after the loss of a loved one.
22 Too Many is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that cares about our nations military community.
Our mission is threefold:
-
Serve as a living memorial: honoring our fallen lost to suicide through running, walking, hiking, biking and educational events
-
Raise awareness of this tragedy and share helpful resources
-
Reach out to the grieving family members left behind - for care, connection and comfort and to assure them their loved ones are never forgotten.
There are many ways to join us in our mission. Read to find out how!
